Super Sense Science

This afternoon we finished off our Superheroes topic with an afternoon of science investigations. We felt around in boxes to see if we could guess what was in there (ice, cornflour, a spiky ball and a sponge), sniffed at mystery smells (including coffee, oranges, raw fish and blue cheese... eugh) and did taste tests of lemons, salt, dark chocolate and sweets.
I'm not sure I like the lemon!

We also went outside to see if we could describe a small world scene that was set up far away at the top of the school field.  We found out that our senses work together to help us understand the world around us.
We filled in investigation sheets and had a stamp chart to make sure we didn't miss anything!

Butterfly-away

Today we all went out to the school wildlife garden to let our butterflies free.  We all crowded around the net to say goodbye.  We don’t think that the butterflies wanted to leave us! They crawled on our hands and we had to gently let them crawl onto the bird table, after a while they got used to their new home and fluttered off in to the trees.  We all enjoyed watching them grow from tiny caterpillars.

One of the butterflies crawls along Mr Littlewood's finger.

After our walk around the local area on Friday, this afternoon we performed short plays that we made about danger, and how we can make the local area safer.

Music Makers

Today we listened to some music from superhero films.  We listened carefully and described how the tempo, volume and pitch changed as the music played.  We drew a visual score of the music and then created our own music in groups using percussion instruments.

Super Monkeys!

Today the Monkeys dressed up as super heroes and went for a walk around Chapeltown.  Unfortunately, nobody had a superpower that could stop the rain, so we all wrapped up well!  We followed a map and made a tally chart of some of the common things that we saw.  We also drew features on to our maps such as zebra crossings, bins and railings.

Butterfly spreads its wings

There was great excitement in the Monkeys classroom this afternoon.  The chrysalises that had formed from the caterpillars that we had in our exploration area had begun to hatch out yesterday... and during our story time at the end of the day, we noticed that another butterfly was hatching out.  We put the butterfly net in the middle of the room and all watched eagerly as the butterfly broke free and spread its beautiful wings.

This week we have been thinking about danger in our local area.  On Friday we are going for a walk dressed as super heroes, we will be looking out for things that could be dangerous, and things that help us to keep safe.  We are making special capes with pictures on them that depict our super power.  To paint these we used powder paint, and learnt how to mix two colours together to make other colours that we need.  We have also made emblems of our initials using a special kind of paint called brusho.

We looked at the work of artist Roy Lichtenstein and created some printed backgrounds for a comic strip story board, telling the story of Molly’s kidnap and rescue.  We used a range of connectives to make our story interesting.

Superhero visit!

On Friday we had a visitor!  Miss Fantastic Furry Finder had rescued Molly and Mario and brought them back to us.  We thought of some questions that we’d like to ask Miss F about how she had rescued Molly
Some of the children thought they recognised the hero behind the mask!

Tuesday, 11 September 2012

This morning we got a letter from a super hero, Miss Fantastic Furry Finder, offering to help find Molly.  We had to write a letter back to Miss F, describing Molly as accurately as we could.  Here is some of our work.

Monday, 10 September 2012

We arrived at school to find that Molly, our class mascot had been stolen by burglars.  There was police tape blocking off our role play area, and muddy footprints leading to the door.  Mario, the Meerkats’ mascot had also been stolen.

Molly and Mario sent us a video message saying that we needed a super hero to help us.  We all hope Molly comes home soon!

We created our own super hero characters made some comic strip ‘action splats’ using wow words, we stuck some of these wow words up on our scrap book display.
